Introduction
Water conservation has become a critical priority for rural communities, particularly in regions where agriculture heavily depends on seasonal rainfall. Strengthening local water resources not only supports farming activities but also helps maintain groundwater levels and ensures long-term water security. In this context, an important water conservation initiative was undertaken in Baloda village of Dewas district to enhance water storage capacity and improve water availability for the community.
Pond Deepening Initiative
In July 2025, a pond deepening activity was carried out in Baloda village by Vibhavari NGO, with the support of Sun Pharma Company. The primary objective of this initiative was to strengthen water conservation infrastructure in the village and increase the storage capacity of the existing pond.
The work focused on deepening the pond to allow it to store a greater volume of rainwater during the monsoon season. Such interventions are essential for rural areas where ponds serve as key sources of irrigation and groundwater recharge.
Increase in Water Storage Capacity
As a result of the deepening work, the water storage capacity of the pond increased by approximately 15.66 million liters (156.66 lakh liters). This significant increase has enhanced the pond’s ability to capture and store rainwater during the monsoon.
Following the completion of the work, the pond filled up during the monsoon season, demonstrating the effectiveness of the intervention and confirming that the additional storage capacity is now actively contributing to local water availability.
Benefits for Farmers and Agriculture
The improved water storage is providing multiple benefits to the local farming community. Farmers located near the pond now have access to additional water for irrigation, which helps support crop cultivation, especially during periods of reduced rainfall.
Improved irrigation availability can contribute to:
Better crop productivity
Reduced dependence on uncertain rainfall
Increased agricultural stability for local farmers
This initiative therefore plays an important role in strengthening agricultural livelihoods in Baloda village.
Contribution to Groundwater Recharge
Apart from irrigation benefits, the increased storage capacity is also expected to support groundwater recharge in the surrounding areas. When ponds store water for longer durations, a portion of that water gradually percolates into the soil, helping replenish underground aquifers.
This natural recharge process contributes to:
Improved groundwater levels
Better functioning of wells and borewells
Long-term sustainability of water resources in the region
Toward Sustainable Water Management
The pond deepening initiative in Baloda village represents an important step toward sustainable water management. By enhancing local water infrastructure, the project not only addresses immediate irrigation needs but also strengthens the long-term resilience of the village against water scarcity.
Collaborative efforts between community organizations like Vibhavari NGO and corporate partners such as Sun Pharma demonstrate how partnerships can effectively support environmental conservation and rural development.
Conclusion
The pond deepening activity in Baloda village has significantly increased water storage capacity and improved water availability for the local community. With an additional 15.66 million liters of storage, the initiative is benefiting farmers, supporting groundwater recharge, and contributing to sustainable agricultural practices.
Such water conservation efforts highlight the importance of investing in local natural resources to build resilient rural ecosystems and secure the future of farming communities.
